As tcq mentioned, Hannah has really improved his offensive game over the past few years. Gotta give him credit for working to expand his game, developing the ability to hit mid range jumpers, and even being a non-zero threat to hit a 3 pointer here and there.
What I don't like about his usage this year...(and maybe this was a condition on him returning to BU for his extra year)...is that he is spending way more time out on the perimeter on both ends of the floor. I just don't think that gives us the best chance to be our best this year. Maybe it's good for Darius and his pro prospects to show more versatility in his game this year, but I just fear that he is gonna get exposed more and more as the year goes on if he continues to play out on the floor more. He is catching the ball 25 feet from the basket and trying to put it on the floor to get into the paint...that is a turnover waiting to happen every time and teams are gonna key in on that. He was just so good last year at getting the ball down low and using his quickness to get easy baskets against other teams' bigs...I just don't want to see us completely go away from that and have Almar or Meta catching balls in the post while Darius is floating around at the 3 point line. On the defensive end, too...he just cannot guard perimeter players effectively...and if we keep putting him out there, teams are gonna key in on that and attack him over and over again...
Maybe it's just the matchups early in the year that have led to some of this...but if we get into the Valley season and he's still spending a lot of time floating around out on the perimeter, I just don't think it will go well for us.

Yes that’s a great observation….. I broached that subject , more From a Almar / post verse DH on perimeter , at the Smoker this year. Wardle made it clear that Almar down low wasn’t going to change …… and Wardle did kinda hint that Hannah staying was with “ concessions .” He also said that our 5’s were basically 4’s were 3’s……. Agree I’d love to see DH down low a little more……. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I do think a lot of his usage has to do with "promises" or "agreements" to him coming back. I get it - you are better with him than without him. But he's not a perimeter player. He can be out there some - but not as much as he is. Especially on defense. His early rebounding and blocked shot numbers are down. Late in the NIU game they had Duke, Bully, Zek, Davis and Hannah out there. That is probably closer to how it should be honestly.

Late in the NIU game they had Duke, Bully, Zek, Davis and Hannah out there. That is probably closer to how it should be honestly. Yeah...I get that "promises/concessions" were made to him to get him to come back for another year. You gotta do what you gotta do to get talent in this day and age in college basketball...and if one of those concessions was that we wouldn't be using Darius exclusively as a "pure 5" and asking him to guard guys that have 30+ lbs on him night after night, then I get that piece of it, to a certain extent...in theory, it means that he might not wear down as quickly in games and could play more minutes for us. OK...fine. It's probably gonna hurt us a bit on the defensive boards and it takes our best shot blocker away from the paint and leaves guys like Almar/Meta down there instead...not a great tradeoff there. But offensively it is equally problematic for us. NIU basically played 4 guards and a 6'7" forward all night against us. Hannah was routinely being guarded out on the perimeter by guys that were 6'2" - 6'5"...there's no advantage there for us if he is just gonna catch the ball 25 feet from the basket and try to put it on the floor and get by a bunch of quicker guys. He's not a good ball handler, he isn't quick enough to blow by smaller guys, and as much as he's improved his 3 point shot, I don't think we want him to be out there launching 5+ threes every night. So, I don't know...I get that we agreed to adjust his role a bit for him to return...but at some point, there are gonna be key moments in conference games that we need to win...and if teams are gonna try to go small against us and put guards out on Hannah, we've got to make them pay for that by having him move down low and getting him the ball to exploit that mismatch every single time down until the other team is forced to adjust. Leaving him out on the perimeter and having Almar and Meta there as options to catch the ball in the post just makes us worse at two different spots offensively. We'll see how it plays out. The staff knows what they are doing...and I feel like at some point, there are just gonna be games and matchups where they have to impress on Darius that it gives us a much better chance at winning if we have him in the paint on both sides more often than not...

Concessions? What better team would he have gone to and play as many minutes and let him play out in the perimeter so much? I understand he wants to showcase his skills for the next level but you have to be noticed first. Scoring, rebounding, defense, high percentage shooting and WINNING is what puts you on the next level radar. Hopefully he has the right people in his ear. You also just need to put in the work off season. Scouts are really taking notice of your work ethic. They'll take a guy who is the first one in, last out of a gym with slightly less skills then the guy who coasts.

He maybe wouldn't have gone to a better team, but someplace that had a little NIL money and was agreeable to him "showcasing his talents" away from the basket. I suspect it had more to do with him thinking of how he could improve his prospects at the next level, whatever that is for him.

The head coach at UWM would have let him do whatever he wants offensively and also could have gotten him NIL money.

Maybe he can help Darius figure some things out.
